Sci-Fi Dine-in Theater with a food allergy

This quick review was provided Gillian, whose daughter is allergic to dairy and egg.

This was my daughter’s favourite meal all week. Chef Jason spoke directly to her and asked her what she wanted to eat. He prepared a gourmet safe burger with toppings of her choice- sautéed onions, pickles, lettuce and ketchup all on a safe bun served with fries and a glowing Ariel lemonade.

The waiter was also happy to serve both of the kids apple slices (listed as a dessert) as a starter, and they brought out a safe chocolate ice-cream sundae. She loved her meal here. There was one minor hiccup here…for some reason a busser/different waiter delivered a bowl of pickles and mayo to the table where she was sitting. Not sure if that is a standard delivery or was a mistake meant for another table, but in the dark it could have easily been missed or mistaken and accidentally consumed by my daughter if she was younger or less aware.

The darkness in this venue and the way the cars are set up (kids in front, parents in back) may be uncomfortable for some allergy parents, as it makes it more challenging to see and inspect the food being delivered and eaten.

Hollywood Vine breakfast brownie egg dairy-freeGreat waiter and Great Chef.  I thought at first the chef was a bit grumpy as he just stood there and asked what we wanted, but then he brought out loads of safe foods for our daughter and even gave me some packaged Soy Milks to go.

They also made her a brownie/ice cream dessert since they brought out a birthday cupcake for her sister.  I liked that they were considerate enough to privately ask me whether it was okay to bring out different surprise desserts or if I would want them to be the same.  This was our favourite character breakfast for service and fun for the kids. (Food was better than we expected for us.)

This quick review was provided by Brian, whose wife avoids gluten.

We went to 50’s Prime Time specifically for my wife to have the gluten free fried chicken. We followed all of the suggestions online, we listed the allergy when making the reservation. We called Disney dining two hours ahead as suggested, they said there was no need to call ahead. When we got to the restaurant gluten free fried chicken was not an option, our waitress Tiffany said that you need to call the restaurant 24 in advance. This is evidently because they do not keep the dedicated allergen fryer at temperature at all times.

Gluten free fried chicken at 50s Prime Time CafeShe got chef Frank who said no worries the oil was already at temperature. They got the bartender to customize a wheat free cocktail, and my wife actually cried when she ate fried chicken for the first time in 5 years. The take away is leave nothing to chance, call the restaurant directly the
day before your reservation. The staff was really great, and very accommodating.

This quick review was provided by Meghan, whose son is allergic to milk, egg and peanut.

Hollywood & Vine with food allergiesWe had a party of 11 people, ages 4-66, and everyone really loved dinner here! My 4 year old son is allergic to milk, eggs and peanuts. I made our reservation online and indicated we had someone with these food allergies. The host confirmed when we checked in and then the waiter was fully aware when we were seated. The chef came out and walked me through the buffet going over what food would be safe for my son – there were plenty of options, including a pasta bar that my son loved (he had multi-grain rotini pasta w/ marinara sauce). The best part for my son with these allergies was that they had tofutti ice cream and enjoy life cookies they brought out for dessert. My son finally was able to have a special dessert like everyone else. He loved it, and it made my day to see him enjoy a meal at a restaurant as much as he did! Would definitely recommend to anyone!

Fairfax Fare gluten free – quick review

This quick review was provided by Gaye, who is allergic to gluten and chickpea.

fairfax-fareI went to Fairfax Fare with interested hopes, as I had read of someone else having a hot dog, GF hot dog bun, with barbecue pork on top. But when I spoke to the chef, he said I could not have anything but a plain hot dog and GF bun. He had the book out, flipping through it very fast, and mentioned I couldn’t have the barbecue. I think this was in error–the book has the allergens in large letters in little colored blocks, beside each food, and I did NOT see gluten listed as an allergen for barbecue. But the chef was in a large hurry, AND seemed very confident of what he was saying. He also had the attitude of “I’m not giving you anything I don’t think you should have.” So I told him I wouldn’t eat there…and ended up not eating anything, because it was time sit down for Fantasmic.

Hollywood & Vine with food allergies

This quick review was provided by Darrin, whose son is allergic to Dairy, Peanuts, Tree Nuts.

“Best restaurant ever!!!”, is what my son said after we had dinner at Hollywood & Vine. The chef came out and walked the buffet line with me. Here are the foods that my son had:

Baked chicken
Seasonal vegetables
Strip loin
Roast Turkey

They also have a pasta bar where we were able to get plain pasta with marinara sauce on the side. They heat the pasta up in hot water right there.

He loved the food but it was the dessert that made his day. The chef put together an ice cream sundae with chocolate toffuti ice cream, Enjoy life chocolate chip cookies, sprinkles, and Hershey’s chocolate sauce. The chef also lined the plate with dairy free caramel popcorn.

I was able to find the dairy free caramel popcorn in Animal Kingdom. I don’t remember the exact location but there is a kiosk that sells foods that are free of the top seven allergens. We were walking from Expedition Everest to Flame Tree BBQ when we discovered it.

Hollywood & Vine with food allergiesI’m very surprised to read the review submitted by Gretchen about this restaurant. We were there back in November 2012 and my son is allergic to milk, egg, peanuts, tree nuts, and sesame. The chef made my son fresh pancakes and waffles, bacon, and fresh fruit. Maybe it all depends on what chef is on duty? Surprising because we’ve eaten at 10-15 different restaurants at Disney and none of them ever offered us
frozen waffles.

This quick review was provided by Gretchen, whose son is allergic to peanut, cashew, egg, and dairy.

Dining with food allergies at Hollywood & VineAfter being seated, we had a chef arrive within 8 minutes to walk us through the buffet. He said we could just pick up things from the buffet but stay away from baked goods. I told him I would prefer something be prepared in the kitched for him so we could avoid cross-contamination. He said all they could make was Van’s frozen waffles and fresh fruit. So that’s what DS ate. We eat this at home, so he was fine.

I’m glad he was just a week shy of 3yo, because I’d hate to pay the character meal, table-service price for a 3yo to just eat frozen waffles! But my son was all about Special Agent Oso and loved every minute here. One note…the chef said strawberries aren’t normally on the breafast buffet, but he brought some out for DS, which he loved. So, that was nice.

Dining at the ABC Commissary with food allergies

This quick review was provided by Meaghan, who is allergic to tree nuts, peanuts and sesame.

We ate here for lunch with our 2 allergic children. Spoke to a manager who was FANTASTIC! He prepared the kid’s meals. They were not so healthy (hah!) but they were safe 🙂

I was also very happy to find he Food allergy dining at the ABC Commissaryswapped out some of the sides for “Enjoy Life” brand cookies and grapes. SO GREAT they have these packaged items because most of the Disney packaged items are not safe.

50s Prime Time Cafe in Disney Hollywood StudiosThis was our favorite gluten free dining of our trip! We loved 50’s Prime Time. We eat gluten free, and we were amazed at our options here. They offered to make my husband gluten free fried chicken. He loved it! My child ordered gluten free chicken nuggets and allergy safe fries cooked in a dedicated fryer. They both devoured their meals, and got their “clean plate club” stickers. :). For dessert my son had a gluten free brownie that was made in-house. It was thick and like a flour less chocolate cake. He loved it! My husband had Dad’s Brownie Sundae, with the gluten free in-house made brownie, ice cream, fudge and caramel corn. It was incredible! We will be returning to 50’s Prime Time on all future Disney trips!!
