Chef Mickeys dairy-free egg-free breakfastThe Chef (Enrico?) took me around the buffet and kept telling me it was fine for her to eat off the buffet.  I insisted that we couldn’t risk cross contamination from eggs and dairy and he seemed a little put out initially.  However, after some effusive graciousness and even a couple of thankful tears from mum, he made her a huge plate of Mickey waffles, brought out smoked salmon roses decorated with fruits and plates of safe meats.

Her also gave her a Mickey cupcake for later.  All in all a great meal (just too bad about the initial buffet pushiness).

Dining at the wave with food allergiesChef Paul made a wonderful meal for daughter of Grilled Fish, Rice Pilaf and Steamed Asparagus.  He also brought out safe breads and Earth Balance butter.  Dessert was an ice cream sundae with Enjoy Life Mickey Ears.  She loved her dinner.

Chef Paul was extremely friendly and nice to us, even thought the restaurant was very busy.  He made me feel like it was no trouble to prepare her something and had no problem switching things around from the allergy menus to make her a meal she would enjoy. My husband and I also loved our meals (we both had a different fish special) at this restaurant.

california-grill-logoGreat job accommodating our daughter’s allergies.  She had a lot of choices and we settled on allergy safe tuna sushi rolls as a starter for the whole table, and she had steak, veg and rice from the children’s meal.  The only disappointment was that they didn’t have a more “exciting” dessert option for her.  She had the fruit kabob minus the yogurt as they said that was the only option.  The waiter kept pushing dessert for me, and I had to explain that I didn’t want to eat a yummy dessert when my daughter could only have 4 pieces of fruit.  Bummer, but we went to Magic Kingdom and got a Dole Whip to make up for it.  Not the end of the world and she didn’t mind having fruit (I was the one disappointed to skip my yummy dessert.  LOL)

Overall another great dinner. My husband and I loved our bison steaks here and our other daughter was excited to have pizza..a rare treat for the sister of a diary allergic kid.

Contempo Cafe with a dairy and egg allergy

Contempo Cafe with food allergiesI saved this one for last because we ate here for 3 breakfasts, one lunch, one dinner and a packed lunch for our daughter for the journey home.  I have mixed feelings about this place.  In general we were satisfied with the breakfast food quality here, but really did not enjoy the lunch or dinner we had here.

The bbq chicken pizza my husband ordered was goopy and covered in sickly sweet bbq sauce, mayo (?) and mounds of greasy cheese.  I had a grilled steak salad and could barely eat it because it was swimming in dressing and oil.

However, the main issue at this place was the inconsistency between the managers when ordering our daughter’s food.  On our first visit, the manager told me the only safe option on the dinner menu for our daughter was the allergy tenders and fries.  In her words, “they are the only thing I can for sure guarantee”.  So that’s what we ordered. She also gave us a cupcake from Chef Mickey’s.

But then the next manager at lunch told me she had a lot of options and proceeded to pull out the allergy menu.  The tuna sandwich was listed on the egg allergy menu, which I thought was suspicious.  I questioned the manager (young blonde lady) and she kept saying the tuna sandwich was fine because it was on the menu.  She offered to get the ingredients binder which on closer inspection listed :”egg yolk” as I suspected in the mayo.  Then she continued to try and convince me that it was still safe because “egg” was not listed in bold as an allergen despite the clear listing of it in the ingredient.  I lost all confidence and asked if we could just have the allergy tenders again made in the dedicated fryer.  I also asked if we could have a cupcake, and she said no they were for Chef Mickey’s guests only.  She gave me a small pack of Enjoy Life cookies.

Later that evening I went back to Contempo to see if I could get a cupcake for our daughter to take to CRT the next day.  The male manager at the time, got me 2 from Chef Mickeys but as he handed them over, said “you got the last two from Chef Mickey’s, now they don’t even have any.”  This made me feel really bad.  I hope we didn’t ruin the night for another allergy kid.  On our second and third breakfast, Brenda was available to help me order breakfast and a safe lunch for our ride home.  She was fabulous, making our daughter waffles and giving us lots of those little packets of fruit and carrots to have in the parks.   She packed our daughter a goldfish sandwich and gave her some extra treats.  Thank you Brenda!

Contempo Cafe with food allergiesI am writing this review as a reminder that as good as Disney is with food allergies, major mistakes can still be made. I went to the Contempo Cafe for breakfast in May 2014, and after speaking with the manager put in my order for an allergen free Mickey waffle. When the cashier entered our order into the computer, she forgot to mark my meal as an allergy, so a regular waffle was brought to me instead.

Since it was our first day there, I was unaware that a manager always hand delivers allergy friendly meals to the guests who ordered them, so I assumed that the waffle brought to me was the allergy-friendly one and ate it. By the time the manager came to correct the problem, I had eaten the entire waffle full of gluten and whole milk. The manager handled everything very well, making sure I had Benedryl and an epi-pen, and offering to get me medical attention if needed. However, it goes to show that even in a place as food allergy friendly asDisney World, we should always be careful and confirm that the food delivered to us is in fact allergen free.

Recommend for dairy, soy, gluten, and tree nuts: Maybe

This quick review was provided by Gretchen, whose son is allergic to peanut, cashew, egg, and dairy.

Dining with food allergies at Chef MickeysA chef was at our table within 3 minutes of being seated. He walked us through the buffet and told us what they would prepare for our DS in the kitchen free of his allergies and cross-contamination.

It took about 15 minutes, but a HUGE plate of food was prepared and delivered to my 3yo son. Baked chicken, broccoli, carrots, cucumber, and fresh strawberries. At the end of our dinner, a 1st visit cupcake was brought to my DS that was all allergy-free complete with icing. My DS was in heaven! “For me? I can eat it?” We plan to eat here at least once on every return visit! Plus, the character interactions are some of the best around!

Recommend for peanut, cashew, egg, dairy: Yes

The Wave – Guest food allergy review

We have another great guest review from Tara Wolfe who shared her son’s dining experience with multiple food allergies. Kevin is allergic to milk, eggs, peanuts, all tree nuts and coconuts.

I have always wanted to stay at the Contemporary resort. The idea of hopping the monorail over to Magic Kingdom or Epcot, and not having to wait on a bus out in the elements, really appealed to me. Then, when I saw photos of the modern rooms, I knew this was going to be my dream place. Dining at the wave with food allergiesAlthough we haven’t stayed here yet, our last trip, we made sure to eat here. Since it was our 11th anniversary, I wanted to find a nice place where we hadn’t eaten before. And dining with a food allergic child, we always go over the menus prior to our trip, to be sure it will be a safe place, too.

Walking into The Wave, makes me feel like I am going into the Space Mountain ride. It seems so futuristic. We only had to wait for 5 minutes until our name was called. The waitress had already notified the chef. When he suggested a pizza, I was reluctant. My son’s face lit up though. So I peppered the chef with questions: Is the cheese milk free? No whey or casein right? What about the crust? He patiently answered all my questions. The Wave dining with food allergies As it turns out, he uses Daiya cheese. I use that at home on my son’s pizzas too! Our son was so excited to eat a pizza I hadn’t made for him. He felt so special. No sooner did the chef return with the pepperoni pizza, my son was digging in. It was gone in a matter of minutes. He said he didn’t want to hurt my feelings, but it was the best pizza he had ever eaten. He also had a fruit cup and milk-free ice cream for dessert. He was so happy. And he also declared that this was OUR restaurant from now on.

My husband chose the Chicken with Waffles. He ate his meal almost as fast as our son did his! He said it was delicious. I went for the Filet Mignon. I love a good steak, and this was a great one. It gave Le Cellier a run for its money. But the dessert is one of the best parts. My husband and I both picked two different dessert samplers and shared. We got to try the American Flavor and the Creamy Indulgence. I would be hard pressed to decide which ones I liked best. After dinner, make time to walk around this lovely resort. Even though every resort has a shop, many carry unique items. Then, catch the monorail over to Magic Kingdom and watch the fireworks!

As for advice on how to dine safely with food allergies, here are a few tips when planning and taking your vacation. We made ADR’s (Advanced Dining Reservations) 180 days in advance, noting on the reservations that we had food allergies. We also contacted the Special Diets department at Disney World through email. We filled out all the forms and faxed back with the ADR’s listed and the food allergies in detail. Once we arrived at the restaurant, we made sure the Hostess had a note that we had food allergies and which ones they were. When we were seated, we mentioned the food allergies to our server who went to get the chef. The chef went over what he could have and let Kevin, our son, decided what he wanted to eat. If we had questions on any product, they would bring us the ingredient label. Also….the chef should be the one delivering the food allergy safe food, so that there is no cross contamination or mix up. The chef also came out periodically to check on us to make sure everything was ok.
